Should your business be registered for data protection?

All businesses must be registered for data protection unless they are exempt. Some business activities automatically require registration such as pension scheme administrators, lawyers, consultants and marketing firms. These are businesses that process personal information as part of their service offering.

Certain ancillary activities may mean that an exempt business still has to register.

If the business is responsible for a CCTV scheme, if it promotes goods or services on behalf of third parties, if it markets other companies’ goods and services or if it uses credit reference information, it must register.

If your business is involved in any of these activities it must be registered for data protection.
